Dr. Mei Wang has been on the faculty of the Program of Cancer Stem Cell Biology at Duke- NUS Graduate Medical School since 2011. Trained both in Biochemistry (University of Miami and Duke University) and in clinical medicine (UNC-Chapel Hill), Dr. Wang is now focusing on the role of protein prenylation, particularly the last step of this process involving the enzyme isoprenylcysteine carboxylmethyltransferase (Icmt), in cellular signaling and regulation. Her recent research has led to the discovery that Icmt regulates cancer cell respiration, energy metabolism and anabolic activities. The inhibition of Icmt results in halted cell growth and proliferation, elevated autophagy, and ultimately cell death. The translation of these findings can be potentially meaningful in the arena of cancer therapeutics.
