Congratulations to Prof. Toshio Suda for being awarded the 2020 E. Donnall Thomas Lecture and Prize!

CSI Singapore is pleased to announce that Senior Principal Investigator, Prof. Toshio Suda, has been awarded the 2020 E. Donnall Thomas Lecture and Prize for his outstanding contributions to the field of stem cell research. Prof. Suda will present his lecture at the 62nd ASH Annual Meeting and Exposition.

Established in 1992, this lectureship and prize was named after the late Nobel Prize laureate and past president of ASH E. Donnall Thomas, MD. This prestigious award recognizes ground-breaking research achievements in haematology that signify a pivotal discovery in the field.

“It is a great honour for a stem cell biologist like me to receive the award named after Dr. E. Donnall Thomas, a renowned expert in bone marrow transplantation,” said Prof. Suda in an ASH article. “I am grateful to be acknowledged by ASH, and I accept this award with gratitude to my colleagues, whose hard work has been critical to our discoveries.”

Prof. Suda is an internationally esteemed scientist whose research centred on hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) and the stem cell niche. Through his research, Prof. Suda has unravelled novel insights into the molecular regulation of HSCs and helped lay the foundation for a better understanding of the hematopoietic system. His scientific pursuits have eventually culminated in the discovery of the metabolism in the hypoxic niche for HSCs in the bone marrow, as well as the establishment of the new field of oxidative stress in HSCs. Over the course of his 40-year career, Prof. Suda has also mentored more than 100 graduate students in Japan, with numerous prominent mentees who are now leading research into stem cell biology, cancer biology and clinical haematology.

Prof. Suda has published more than 435 peer-reviewed papers in Blood, Nature, Nature Medicine, Cell, Cell Stem Cell, Immunity, Journal of Clinical Investigation, Journal of Experimental Medicine, and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Warmest congratulations to Prof. Suda on receiving this prestigious award!
