IT Analyst

The position exists to provide IT & AV support service for the Institute’s staff through the CSI Computational Core.

Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Computational Core – Main Responsibility
    • To ensure provision of services under the User Support Unit – deals with all matters relating to desktop environment such as notebooks, MacOS, Windows and Linux, printers, users’ backup system:
    • To ensure proper administration and management of applications and network infrastructure
    • Assist admin and lab staff in PC/printer/scanner setup and troubleshooting
    • Data backup, restoration and recovery
    • Security and fault management, and performance management of IT/AV equipment
    • Work in tandem with Facility Manager in management, planning and monitoring of computer resource usage and deployment, including data and disaster recovery centres, as well as server virtualisation
    • Provide support for institute’s new and existing applications, including project management, including management of outsourced contractors
    • Provide support to admin office in creating eSurveys, online payment and charging, and generating relevant data for admin use
    • Install off the shelf and/or develop and maintain inhouse institute specific information systems
  1. Other areas of the Computational Core – assist Lead IT Specialist in:
    • Software Systems Unit – software distribution & license monitoring
    • Database Unit – technical support for CSI’s internet and intranet presentations
    • Networks Unit – physical data network, internet connections
    • Scientific Servers Unit – maintain CSI servers and Virtual machines
    • Communication Unit – maintain and update the CSI’s website, interacts with CSI website contractor for any substantial modifications. Manages the CSI’s online tools such as the booking and file sharing systems
  1. Other duties & responsibilities
    • Assist CSI Scientists in choosing the proper hardware for running their bioinformatics pipelines (sequencing datasets)
    • Assist CSI Scientists in implementing strategies for large file backups and archives (sequencing and microscopy datasets)
    • Advise on technical possibilities of design posters and publicity materials for special events
    • Any other duties as assigned by senior management

Requirements

  • Degree or equivalent from recognized university, with Computer Science or Engineering related area
  • Preference will be given to those with:
  • at least 1 year of relevant working experience
  • skills in PHP and MySQL programing and Linux/Tomcat/Apache environments
  • Optional: skills in Microsoft ASP.NET, ASP, Java/J2EE, VB
  • Proactive and dedicated with good verbal and written communication skills
  • Good project handling, hands-on analytical and problem solving skills

Executive (Outreach)

To provide support for outreach activities in the institute, including events management, marketing communications and media publicity.

Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Plan and organise outreach activities like scientific symposia and conferences to increase the profile of the institute within the local and international scientific community.
  2. Develop media publicity plans to promote the institute and its latest research breakthroughs to the press and public.
  3. Plan and coordinate production of corporate marketing collaterals and advertisements
  4. Search and collate information to update to the corporate website; work closely with IT Analyst to ensure that website is functional, regularly updated with the latest news and breakthroughs; work with web designer on website.
  5. Organise & plan visit programmes for the Institute’s guests (visitors/potential recruits), Scientific Advisory Board, International Review Panel, industry visitors, Governing Board and granters.

Requirements

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Communications or Life Sciences.
  2. 1 to 2 years of professional experience in public relations or journalism preferred
  3. Skill in multi-tasking and relationship management
  4. Ability to work independently and make decisions

Scientific Officer

The position exists to provide

  • Support to CSI faculty in science writing for non-media outlets which involves communicating scientific research to a professional or lay audience, either for journals, granting/funding bodies, promotional brochures and websites or as press releases. This will include an element of editing or broader communications responsibilities to substantiate the research publication, grant applications and journal review processes.
  • Personal Assistant support to 4 to 5 professors who are Principal Investigators (PI)

Duties & Responsibilities:

Scientific writing & editing:

  • Reviewing and editing scientific papers for publication in print and online according to agreed style and format of scientific journals
  • Assist in writing up grant proposals, assembling and coordinating collaborative program grants
  • Reading and researching specialist media and literature, e.g. scientific papers, company reports, newspapers, magazines and journals, press releases and internet resources including social media
  • Meeting with colleagues and scientists to plan the content of a document or publication
  • Conducting reference searches
  • Assist to review and amend work in response to editor feedback
  • Assist in selecting appropriate artwork
  • Assist in reading page proofs from journals and checking colour proofs

Personal Assistant:

  • Provide primary support and assistance to 4 to 5 Principal Investigators who are professors on their respective scientific projects, tracking of research grants, grant applications, reviews, ethics/safety & risk protocols, regular progress/appraisal/other reports
  • Assist in scheduling appointments, writing meeting minutes and coordinating research/other meetings as well as following up decisions made and other necessary actions as required
  • Assist in leave applications, reimbursements of expenses, arrangements for travel and logistics for attending international conferences including registration and accommodation
  • Liaise with NUS & NUHS research offices, Office of Legal Affairs and ILO (on issues of intellectual property, project and research collaboration agreements, MTAs, NDAs, etc.) and external funding agencies
  • Ensure good and tidy document housekeeping and timely correspondence.
    • Maintain letters of award, approvals, amendments, etc.
    • Maintain computerized grant/financial data and progress reports

Requirements:

  • MSc or PhD in Science, Medicine, or related field
  • 3 to 4 years’ experience in a similar position or laboratory supervisory position
  • Good team player
  • Excellent writing and reporting ability

  • Preference will be given to candidates with experience in
    • Coordinating and tracking multiple projects and their progress towards grant requirements

Laboratory Executive

a) Research:

  • to organise, preserve and present the results of the experiments in a logical manner
  • to properly and systematically record all experiments that have been assigned and their results
  • to analyse and plan further experiments under guidance
  • to assist in supervising, training and guiding attachment/undergraduate students where required

b) Laboratory:

  • to plan and ensure the needs and requirements of the team in terms of consumables
  • to ensure that the lab is adequately stocked with clean glassware, minor equipment chemicals, etc. required for experiments
  • responsible for the cleanliness and maintenance of equipment through regular checks
  • required to assemble reagents, chemicals and media that are needed for experiments
  • to ensure that standard operating procedures and safety regulations are followed
  • responsible for the general cleanliness of the lab

c) Administrative duties:

  • to plan and ensure that the overall lab administrative needs of the team are met
  • to assist the Principal Investigator in tracking his/her grants and other sources of funding
  • responsible for purchasing necessary equipment, chemicals, reagents as required by the lab or project
  • maintain a systematic and proper record of all purchases
  • liaising between the vendors and the administrative office to ensure proper purchase requisitions, goods delivery and prompt payment of supplies

Laboratory Executive - Prof Yoshiaki ITO

Ito Lab is conducting research on stem cell and cancer. We have very special tool to identify tissue stem cells in multiple organs. By using this tool, which available only in our laboratory in the world at the moment, we identified stem cells in stomach and mammary gland. Focus of our studies, therefore, is primarily on the stem cells and gastric and breast cancer. Our study on stomach stem cells has been published in Gastroenterology 2017, 152:218-231.

The Candidate of Lab Executive is to support and take part of research of stem cell and cancer for the purpose of finding ways for cancer prevention and treatment.

Primary responsibility

  • Maintain mouse breeding and perform genotyping.
  • Analyse mouse tissue (histology and molecular biology).
  • Handle human clinical tissue from hospital.
  • Analyse human tissue (histology and molecular biology).

Secondary responsibility

  • Administrative work (eg. purchase order, safety).
  • Maintain Lab equipment and lab common consumables.

Requirement

  • Diploma or degree in life science.
  • Self-motivation and adaptability.
  • Interested in cancer research.

Laboratory Executive - Dr Yvonne Tay

A lab executive position is available immediately in Dr Yvonne Tay’s lab for a highly motivated candidate with a background in molecular or cellular biology, biochemistry or other related fields who is interested in deciphering regulatory RNA networks in the context of cancer (reviewed in Tay et al, Nature 2014; also see Tay et al, Nature 2008 and Tay et al, Cell 2011). The successful candidate will design and conduct experiments, analyse data, and provide support to the lab in terms of research, laboratory and administrative needs.
