Executive (Outreach)

The Executive (Outreach) will assist to develop and execute outreach activities as well as marketing plans primarily supporting CSI Singapore’s branding & public image to foster the best possible public image for the institute.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Develop, plan and organise outreach activities in order to increase the profile of the institute within the local as well as international scientific community
    1. Internal research meetings
    2. Local scientific conferences and seminars
    3. Educational programmes for undergraduates, JCs, polytechnics & schools
    4. International scientific meetings
    5. Local or international charitable, fund-raising or profile-raising events
  2. Develop plans to promote the institute, its latest research and breakthroughs to the press and public
    1. Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with representatives of community, consumer, employee, and public interest groups
    2. Confer with production and support personnel to produce or coordinate production of company marketing collaterals, advertisements and promotions
    3. Assist to arrange public appearances, lectures, contests, or exhibits for the institute to increase public awareness and to promote goodwill
    4. Assist with effective communication with the public and with employees where required
    5. Assist in collation of information to update to the website; work closely with IT Analyst to ensure that website is functional, regularly updated with the latest news and breakthroughs; work with web designer on website.
  3. Promote a positive public image of the Institute and minimize damage to the institute from negative media reports, scandals and the like
    1. Work with NUS OCR/NUHS Comms & Development Office to draft press releases and contact people in the media who might print or broadcast the institute’s material
    2. Work with NUS OCR/NUHS Comms & Development Office  to arrange press conferences and interviews for management levels & scientific staff
    3. Prepare and/or edit organizational publications for internal and external audiences, including newsletters, institute’s website and annual or performance reports.
    4. Work with NUS OCR/NUHS Comms & Development Office to respond to requests for information from the media or designate another appropriate spokesperson or information source
  4. Organise & plan visit programmes for the Institute’s guests (visitors/potential recruits), Scientific Advisory Board, International Review Panel, industry visitors, Governing Board and grantors.
  5. Develop corporate gift ideas to improve publicity for the institute
  6. Any other duties & responsibilities as assigned by senior management.

Requirements

  1. A bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Communication, Life Sciences or equivalent experience
  2. Knowledge of media relations and communications strategy
  3. 1 to 2 years of professional experience in public relations or journalism or similar field
  4. Skill in multi-tasking and relationship management
  5. Ability to work independently and make decisions
  6. Software and computer skills necessary to the performance of the above duties and responsibilities
  7. Excellent written English required

Laboratory Executive

To provide support to the Principal Investigator and his team in terms of research, laboratory and administrative needs.

Responsibilities

a) Research:

  • to carry out assigned experiments
  • to organise, preserve and present the results of the experiments in a logical manner
  • to properly and systematically record all experiments that have been assigned and their results
  • to analyse and plan further experiments under guidance
  • to assist in supervising, training and guiding attachment/undergraduate students where required

b) Laboratory:

  • to plan and ensure the needs and requirements of the team in terms of consumables
  • to ensure that the lab is adequately stocked with clean glassware, minor equipment chemicals, etc. required for experiments
  • responsible for the cleanliness and maintenance of equipment through regular checks
  • required to assemble reagents, chemicals and media that are needed for experiments
  • to ensure that standard operating procedures and safety regulations are followed
  • responsible for the general cleanliness of the lab

c) Administrative duties:

  • to plan and ensure that the overall lab administrative needs of the team are met
  • to assist the Principal Investigator in tracking his/her grants and other sources of funding
  • responsible for purchasing necessary equipment, chemicals, reagents as required by the lab or project
  • maintain a systematic and proper record of all purchases
  • liaising between the vendors and the administrative office to ensure proper purchase requisitions, goods delivery and prompt payment of supplies

d) Any other duties as required

Requirements

  • Degree in Life Sciences or its equivalent. Fresh graduates are welcome to apply.
  • Knowledge of mouse work is an added advantage
  • Ability to speak and write well in English

Knowledge of

  • Basic principles and practices in the fields of biology, physiology and/or chemistry.
  • Quality assurance procedures applicable to a laboratory.
  • Principles, techniques and terminology used in the examination of clinical and animal samples.
  • Principles, techniques and terminology used in cancer biology.
  • Laboratory scientific resource material; laboratory equipment and its care.
  • Methods of scientific research and relevant scientific theories.
  • Government guidelines and regulations pertinent to laboratory safety and security.
  • Packaging and shipping of diagnostic, infectious and hazardous materials.
  • Appropriate computer operations, software and peripherals.
  • General rules for safe exposure and handling of chemical and biological hazards
  • IRB, OSHE & IACUC regulations
  • Ability to:
    • Perform laboratory tests
    • Work cooperatively and effectively with others

Laboratory Executive - Dr Yvonne Tay

A lab executive position is available immediately in Dr Yvonne Tay’s lab for a highly motivated candidate with a background in molecular or cellular biology, biochemistry or other related fields who is interested in deciphering regulatory RNA networks in the context of cancer (reviewed in Tay et al, Nature 2014; also see Tay et al, Nature 2008 and Tay et al, Cell 2011). The successful candidate will design and conduct experiments, analyse data, and provide support to the lab in terms of research, laboratory and administrative needs.

  • Ability to speak and write well in English
