Scientific Officer

Duties & Responsibilities

 For Institute:

  • Assist with grant applications, manage the review process, and provide administrative support to scientists for the IRB, IACUC, safety/risk and other research regulatory requirements
  • Promote the development of external funding strategies for research, academic projects, and institutional priorities.
  • Provide resources and assistance to faculty, staff, and administrators in searching for external funding opportunities.
  • Assist with preparation and submission of requests for external funding, including grants, sub-awards, and contracts
  • Serve as liaison with NUS research offices, Office of Legal Affairs and ILO (on issues of intellectual property, project and research collaboration agreements, MTAs, NDAs, etc.) and external funding agencies.
  • Assist grant awardees with administration issues in conjunction with the NUS research offices, Office of Financial Services and CSI Finance Team.
  • Provide assistance in budget preparation for grant applications.
  • Ensure good and tidy document housekeeping and timely correspondence:
    • Maintain letters of award, approvals, amendments, etc.
    • Maintain computerized financial data and progress reports
  • Assure that policies and procedures for compliance with research-related regulations are up-to-date and reviewed regularly.

For Principal Investigators:

  • Provide primary support and assistance to Principal Investigators on grant matters such as applications, reviews, ethics/safety & risk protocols, regular progress/ appraisal/other reports
  • Assist in preparation of budgets for research grants, virements and tracking of grants
  • Assist in recruitment process of new team members and assist them to settle in once employed
  • Assist in updating biosketches of Principal Investigators for grant and other purposes, uploading data onto e-portfolio and/or other HR-related documents
  • Liaise with NUS & NUHS research offices, Office of Legal Affairs and ILO (on issues of intellectual property, project and research collaboration agreements, MTAs, NDAs, etc.) and external funding agencies
  • Ensure good and tidy document housekeeping and timely correspondence.
    • Maintain letters of award, approvals, amendments, etc.
    • Maintain computerized grant/financial data and progress reports

Other duties & responsibilities

  • Assist in major events at CSI Singapore
  • Any other duties as assigned by senior management

Requirements

  • MSc or PhD in Life Sciences, Medicine, or related field
  • Preference will be given to candidates with experience in
    • Coordinating and tracking multiple projects and their progress towards grant requirements
  • 3 to 4 years’ experience in a similar position or laboratory supervisory position
  • Good team player
  • Excellent writing and reporting ability
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills

Laboratory Executive

To provide support to the Principal Investigator and his team in terms of research, laboratory and administrative needs.

Responsibilities

a) Research:

  • to carry out assigned experiments
  • to organise, preserve and present the results of the experiments in a logical manner
  • to properly and systematically record all experiments that have been assigned and their results
  • to analyse and plan further experiments under guidance
  • to assist in supervising, training and guiding attachment/undergraduate students where required

b) Laboratory:

  • to plan and ensure the needs and requirements of the team in terms of consumables
  • to ensure that the lab is adequately stocked with clean glassware, minor equipment chemicals, etc. required for experiments
  • responsible for the cleanliness and maintenance of equipment through regular checks
  • required to assemble reagents, chemicals and media that are needed for experiments
  • to ensure that standard operating procedures and safety regulations are followed
  • responsible for the general cleanliness of the lab

c) Administrative duties:

  • to plan and ensure that the overall lab administrative needs of the team are met
  • to assist the Principal Investigator in tracking his/her grants and other sources of funding
  • responsible for purchasing necessary equipment, chemicals, reagents as required by the lab or project
  • maintain a systematic and proper record of all purchases
  • liaising between the vendors and the administrative office to ensure proper purchase requisitions, goods delivery and prompt payment of supplies

d) Any other duties as required

Requirements

  • Degree in Life Sciences or its equivalent. Fresh graduates are welcome to apply.
  • Knowledge of mouse work is an added advantage
  • Ability to speak and write well in English

Knowledge of

  • Basic principles and practices in the fields of biology, physiology and/or chemistry.
  • Quality assurance procedures applicable to a laboratory.
  • Principles, techniques and terminology used in the examination of clinical and animal samples.
  • Principles, techniques and terminology used in cancer biology.
  • Laboratory scientific resource material; laboratory equipment and its care.

Laboratory Executive - Prof Teh Bin Tean

A Laboratory Executive position is available in Cancer Science Institute of Singapore, Prof Teh Bin Tean’s lab.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Carry out research experiments, collect and analyse data
  • Perform administrative duties such as keeping up of Laboratory Safety Management records, inventories and procurement procedures
  • Perform laboratory housekeeping duties and any duties set out by the institute
  • Provide training to new laboratory members
  • Provide assistance in any lab matters as needed

Requirements

  • BSc (Hons) in Biological Sciences or related discipline
  • Experience in research techniques, especially molecular biology and tissue culture
  • Experience in protein expression and purification techniques is a plus
  • Strong basic knowledge in molecular biology and research techniques
  • Experience in setting up assays and analysing data
  • Excellent in spoken and written English

Laboratory Executive - Dr Melissa Fullwood

To perform genomics, molecular biology, cell biology and biochemistry experiments as part of the MJF lab in order to allow the lab to reach its research goals.

Duties & Responsibilities

a) Research

  • To support the functioning of the MJF lab, focusing on research related to chromatin interactions and RNA biology in cancer.
  • To carry out assigned experiments-including creating next-generation sequencing libraries (4C, 3C-Seq, RNA-seq, ChIP-Seq libraries), processing of clinical samples, and other experiments.
  • To liaise with collaborators and other lab members in an effective manner.
  •  To organise, preserve and present the results of the experiments in a logical manner.
  •  To give written and oral presentations of work performed.
  •  To properly and systematically record all experiments that have been assigned and their results in the lab notebook and computer records.
  •  To analyse and plan further experiments under guidance

b) Laboratory:

  • To carry out routine laboratory work including maintenance of the lab.
  • To plan and ensure the needs and requirements of consumables for the project.
  • Required to prepare specimens and samples for experiments.
  • Responsible for the cleanliness and maintenance of equipment through regular checks.
  • Required to procure and assemble reagents, chemicals and media that are needed for experiments.
  • To ensure that standard operating procedures and safety regulations.
  • To take the lead in organizing good safety practices of the lab.

c) Administrative duties

  • Responsible for purchasing necessary equipment, chemicals, reagents as required for the project.
  • Maintain a systematic and proper record of all purchases.
  • Liaise between the vendors and the administrative office to ensure proper purchase requisitions, goods delivery and prompt payment of supplies

Laboratory Executive - Dr Yvonne Tay

A lab executive position is available immediately in Dr Yvonne Tay’s lab for a highly motivated candidate with a background in molecular or cellular biology, biochemistry or other related fields who is interested in deciphering regulatory RNA networks in the context of cancer (reviewed in Tay et al, Nature 2014; also see Tay et al, Nature 2008 and Tay et al, Cell 2011). The successful candidate will design and conduct experiments, analyse data, and provide support to the lab in terms of research, laboratory and administrative needs.
