Advancements in genetics and personalized medicine highlight the need to train both biomedical and medical graduates in the rapidly-developing area of translational cancer research. CSI Singapore aims to train the next generation of cancer researchers to excel both in the scientific and translational aspects of cancer research. For this reason, we have introduced a PhD graduate program in Cancer Biology.
This program seeks to attract top science and medical talents interested in a career in cancer research. Graduate students will have access to world-class facilities dedicated to cancer research and can look forward to working with a dynamic global team of renowned specialized scientists in an intellectually stimulating environment.
This program also aims to produce high-caliber researchers who are capable of independent research investigation, who will contribute original ideas that advance their specific field of cancer research, and are well-equipped to pursue careers in clinical science.
The PhD Graduate Program in Cancer Biology is a four-year program which requires students to fulfill both coursework and research work leading to a PhD research thesis within their five-year candidature period. Students are required to report their research progress to their Thesis Advisory Committee (TAC) on a bi-annual basis. They have to sit and pass the PhD Qualifying Examination by the 2nd year of their candidature by submitting a written thesis proposal for examination. They will submit a PhD thesis for examination by the 4th year of their candidature, and pass their oral defence before the end of their PhD candidature of five years.

In addition to the core modules in Biostatistics, Graduate Research Seminars, Fundamentals of Cancer Research and Translational Cancer Research, a recommended list of elective modules has already been examined for suitability and is pre-approved by the Graduate Program Committee (GPC).
Each successful candidate will undergo 2-3 lab rotations with duration of 8-12 weeks each. Lab rotations are compulsory for all full-time CSI scholarship students. Students must confirm their choice of supervisor by the end of 6 months from the start date of the candidature.
|Thesis Advisory Committee
The Thesis Advisory Committee (TAC) should preferably be formed within 2 months after the nomination of supervisor for PhD candidates.
|PhD Qualifying Examination
The examination aims to 1) Allow the student to confirm as a PhD candidate. 2) Ensure the student has satisfactory research progress. 3) Ensure the student’s research proposal is sufficient for a PhD. 4) Ensure the student is competent at the PhD level
|Continuation & Graduation Requirements
For continuation of candidature, students would have to meet the following CAP set for coursework. PhD: CAP should not fall below 3.3 for two consecutive semesters or below 3.6 for three consecutive semesters.
